The Truth About Cars reports that the Seventh District of the United States Court of Appeals has ruled installation and expansion of red light cameras, solely to raise money in a budget crisis, irrespective of any safety concerns, is valid and does not raise federal due process issues as far as the Federal Court is concerned. However, at least one State Supreme Court, Minnesota, has ruled that such cameras violate that state's Constituion.
We here at NorCal MINIs can see it now - Morgan Stanley selling government backed red light securities. Obviously, government has a vested interest in issuing as many tickets as possible to balance budgets. But come on guys, just raise the damn cost of a traffic ticket and don't spend huge amounts on surveillance technology to increase the volume of infractions.
