A study at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine has concluded that the noise levels in convertibles - at 55 mph it was 85dB - the equivalent of a construction site - and at 75 mph it was 100 dB - the equivalent of a jet plane passing over head or a nightclub - if sustained for a prolonged period can damage your hearing. According to researchers "[e]xposure to noise levels above 85dB for prolonged periods is considered damaging to hearing." The researchers recommend that drivers drive with the top closed when travelling for extended periods of time at speeds exceeding 52 mph.
