California To Hike Fines For Phone Use While Driving

Governor Brown has on his desk a bill passed by the Legislature that raises the maximum fine for using a cell phone without a hands free device while driving to $528. The first time offender fine for holding a cell phone behind the wheel will go from $208 to $328 and a second offense will go from $328 to $528 with the addition of one license point. Bicyclists would also be fined $20 for riding while talking into a phone for the first time and $50 for the second.

The Governor is expected to sign the measure.
