Ten Next Generation MINIs And Five BMWs To Be Based on UKL1 Platform

Rampant reports today that the next generation platform, the Mk3 MINI family, will grow to encompass 10 individual models and will become fully integrated into the BMW family. Autocar.co.uk has this photo gallery of what these vehicles might look like. These new MINIs will be based on a brand-new BMW-engineered platform called UKL1 which sports a front-wheel drive architecture in two wheelbase lengths and is based on a MacPherson strut front suspension and BMW’s Z-axle rear end. Most will be powered by a new range of advanced BMW three-cylinder engines. The UKL1 platform also accommodates all wheel drive. Thus, other AWD MINIs, besides the Countryman and Paceman, are likely. With 10 Mini models planned and as many as five BMW models in the medium term, UKL1 will become BMW’s biggest-selling vehicle range. An electric hybrid MINI is also anticipated as one of the ten new MINIs.
