January Run To Jack London State Park Recap

January 19, 2019

Leaders: Dolores and Rick Sanchez

The first NorCal Mini’s Run of 2019 had a great turnout. We had 30 cars attend this event with a few new members. Some of the new folks were Jose Garcia and his guest Danny, Greg Seeno and wife Roberta and Jermaine Jones to just to name few.

The run started at the Starbucks in Vallejo off of Admiral Callahan Lane. After leaving parking lot, we eventually proceeded west on HWY 37 toward HWY 29. Once on HWY 29 we drove north for about 14 miles through 9 signal lights before arriving at our main turn off at Exit 19 -Trancas St/Redwood Rd in Napa. We pretty much got separated on HWY 29 due to the traffic lights (Good thing Rick and Dolores passed out paper copies of route!). We were all able to regroup at the base of Dry Creek Rd before our 17-mile journey on Dry Creek/Trinity Rd to Glen Ellen. It was a nice 2 lane twisty road. Unfortunately, due to recent rains, the road was heavily muddy in some areas which led to one minor casualty. Alex Tildesley lost traction on a turn and damaged one of his front tires. Fortunately, the damage was not that serious and Alex was able to finish the run with help from new member Jose Garcia.

We arrived at Jack London State Park around 10:30 AM. We visited the park till Noon. During this time, members were able to walk on a self-guided tour to Jack London’s “House of Happy Walls Museum” which had many artifacts from his life. From the museum there was a nature trail that led to Jack London’s Grave site as well as to Wolf House Ruins. The path was beautiful with lots of moss-covered trees, a small stream and wild mushrooms growing on fallen trees. The path was a serene environment. A few members took very nice pictures that were shared on the NorCal Minis website. Once we regrouped in the parking lot, we were able to see for the first time our new “Big” club flag which our President, Simon, proudly displayed by his Mini. Dolores passed out a map of local wineries with a few recommended places to visit as well as menus for Gott’s Roadhouse

After taking our customary group photo, we headed back toward St Helena for lunch at Gott’s Roadhouse. We basically backtracked on Trinity/Dry Creek Road until we reached Oakville Grade Road which led us to HWY 29. We arrived at Gott’s Roadhouse around 1 PM. We did not anticipate that the restaurant would be as busy as it was given the weather conditions. Those of us that ordered ahead lucked out. But no matter, a good time was had by all visiting with each other, having some wine, getting to know our new members or just catching up with old club friends.

Dolores and I want to thank everyone for attending and hope everyone found this to be a fun, different, and enjoyable event. A special thank you to Steve and Tina Sandke for volunteering to be the caboose for this run.
