Over The Hills And Far Away Run - October 8-10, 2021

After cancelling this run two years in a row, we’re back to try again!

REMINDER: THIS RUN IS FOR PAID MEMBERS ONLY!

Your Hosts:
Tina and Steve Sandke

Come join us for a weekend crossing the Sierra Nevada and back! The fall colors will hopefully be in full swing.

We’ll be doing a very informal run up to Murphys Friday afternoon, for those who can make it. See information below.

Saturday’s route takes us over Ebbets and Monitor passes and over to the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. After lunch in the tiny town of Walker, we’ll dash down into Mammoth Lakes, where we’ll spend the night. Dinner will likely be informal and on your own; we’ll finalize this as the run gets close.

Sunday morning we head back north from Mammoth, take a detour around the June Lake Loop, then stop for lunch in Bridgeport. After lunch, we cross Sonora Pass and head back through Sonora and then scatter and return to our lives.

What to bring:
Your radios. Don’t forget chargers and/or extra batteries; these are long days.
Snacks & Drinks. There aren’t any places to stop and grab something on the passes.
Toilet Paper (the bathrooms along the way are, shall we say, rustic in places.)
Stickers you’d like to place at a vista point
A significant portion of Saturday and Sunday are spent at higher altitudes (9000 ft).
Remember to bring plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Note: we strongly suggest booking hotel stays which are refundable. This run is at the mercy of public safety power shutoffs (2019), pandemics (2020), and fires (not yet, but the hills are dry). It’s possible we’ll have to cancel it.

Recap - Gold Country Run and Annual Picnic July 24, 2021

Your Hosts For The Event: Anne and Dave Sitter

Our July 2021 run to the Gold Country was a fun and exciting event. We started in Santa Nella at about 11:00 am, and drove the back roads of Santa Nella into Merced. They were flat roads through the fields and farms back in that area. We were stuck behind a car the entire way that slowed us down, but we still managed to get to our first destination, the Merced Fruit Barn.

There we collected donations for our charity of the run which was the Heading Home Animal Rescue out of Aromas, CA. We collected a total of $1200 for HHAR that will be used to help with veterinary bills and supplies for hundreds of feral and domestic cats and kittens, dogs and other small animals they rescue.

Check out their website link below.

http://www.headinghomerescue.org/

From the Fruit Barn we headed up to the Gold Country on some very winding and beautiful mountain roads. The run took longer than expected due to the roads and vehicles slowing us up, but by 2:30 we were pulling into Indigeny Reserve in Sonora for our annual club picnic. The club provided sandwiches and cookies from Subway as well as drinks and chips. We had a picnic area reserved there for use and we filled it up with all the members who attended. The run ended about 6:00 pm with some people heading to their overnight accommodations and others heading back home.

Special thanks to Dolores for picking up the food from Subway for us and to Simon and Nicki for bringing the drinks and chips.

Most importantly we wanted to extend an overall thank you, again, on behalf of Heading Home Animal Rescue, for the donations. The money collected will go a long way to help these wonderful animals in need of care.

River Road/Carmel Valley Run - Sunday August 29, 2021

Your Hosts For The Event:

Mick Brown and Vickie Casacca

Date of the Event:

Sunday August 29, 2021

This run is one of our club favorites as Mick and Vickie always put together a great day. The run will start in Salinas and head west on Highway 68 to River Road and follow it south down to Arroyo Seco and around to Carmel Valley Road. There will be some twisties and there is a section that is only one lane. Once we get to Carmel Valley we will meet at the Carmel Valley Community Park at 25 Ford Road where we will group back up for some fun and games (details to come).

That is where the run will end and you are free to either head home or have lunch. There are many places in the area to eat such as the Trailside Cafe, Cafe Rustica and Mick and Vickie's favorite local dive bar The Running Iron. There are also many wineries in the area that are open for tasting.

In addition nearby is the Moto Talbott. Motorcycle Museum on 4 East Carmel Valley Road. A wonderful collection of classics. The fee to enter is only $10.

http://www.mototalbott.com/

This run is also a FUNDRAISER for the Salinas Circle for Children! A wonderful organization to help children with special needs in Monterey county. The club is donating $250.00 so bring your checkbook to the run and hopefully all of us can match it. Check out their website below.

https://salinascircle.org/

We are going to have TWO meet up times!

Our normal meetup spot in Salinas  is the Starbucks/Lucky parking lot at 1186 South Main Street. However, on Sundays they hold a weekly Cars and Coffee meetup and show. It starts at 8 and goes until 10. So, Mick and Vickie will be there at 8am and try and save an area of our group. Should be a great way to start the day. Show off our cars and also check out the many others that show up.

Recap - Napa Sonoma Twisty Run June 13, 2021

Your Hosts For The Event: Pat & Michelle Lewis

To our many NorCal MINI’s members who joined us to brave twisty roads in hilly Napa and Sonoma, or for those who wished they may have joined, here’s a recap of our JUNE 13, 2021 run.

By 8 am, our first excited MINI drivers began to arrive at our Start-Point, the Solano Town Center Mall, in Fairfield. Among the earliest was Club President, Simon Tildesley, who hoisted NorCal Mini’s club flag, the focal point MINI’s unite around. Typical of our social group, new and old members began greeting one another discussing adventures of past, new features added to MINI’s, and intrigue of our day ahead. The parking lot was spotted with MINI’s parked in what might be described as a “wishbone” in shape.

9:00am, our drivers meeting was announced, with 36 of the 46 car registered in attendance. Simon greeted all attendees, reminding of the coming July Gold Country run and of the importance of the Charities our club supports. Last, the Dunsmuir run in November and need for booking early, if staying overnight. Pat and Michelle Lewis, host for the June run, shared details of the route ahead and stressed the need for having fun. Michelle ensured every guest had a ticket for the free drawing at the end of the event.

LET’S ROLL!

Drivers lined behind one of three lead cars, championed by Michelle (lead of group 1), Simon (group 2) and Anita (group 3). Kudos to our “sweepers” Gordon and Michael who ensured no one was left behind. Keeping the large group together proved challenging as we headed North through a maze of stop-lights and side streets leading us to Highway 121. Once on Highway 121, the group settled to a gentle pace, given plenty of traffic from in front and behind. From 121, the group merged to Highway 128, snaking along the twisty roads leading past Lake Berryessa and toward world famous Napa/Rutherford’s wine region.

Our comfort break at the mid-point on Trancas road, in Napa proved necessary for most. Our second half of the drive was advertised as narrower, super twisty and requiring higher focus than the 1st segment. This important detail, and cautions for the conditions of the road conditions ahead where shared during our second driver’s meeting held in the Lucky’s/Starbucks parking lot. At least one additional car joined our many from Napa.

Once underway, our second, and final half of the drive took us through the Enchanted Hills, which divide Napa, from Sonoma valley. Redwood Road, to Dry Creek Road. Mt Veeder Road, back to Dry Creek, and finally Trinity road, proved to be super twisty, yet also of questionable road quality. Lowered cars with stiff springs felt these county road’s neglect. Alas smooth roads of Sonoma Valley welcomed the team for their final drive to Lagunitas brewery.

Three giveaways where shared with lucky ticket holders to commemorate the day.

As reminder, don't forget to register for July’s run - on July 24th through the Gold Country as this is also our ANNUAL PICNIC (the club provides lunch for all) and is also a VERY IMPORTANT FUNDRAISER FOR HEADING HOME ANIMAL RESCUE that our own Anne Sitter (her and her husband Dave are the event hosts) is very involved with.

Pat & Michelle Lewis

MOTOR ON!!

Recap - Lake Tahoe Run May 22, 2021

Your Host For The Event: Larry Anderson

All in all, this run had everything you could possibly ask for; twisty roads, sunshine, snow, beautiful scenery, a police “escort”, and most importantly great friends, both old and new.

Pre-run -
For a smaller group, the day got off to an early start as members from the South Bay and East met up in San Ramon for some much-needed fuel (both coffee and gasoline).  From there, the mini-MINI group headed north towards the run starting point in Fairfield.

We’re off! -
Once everyone assembled at Solano College in Fairfield, we headed off to our first stop in Winters.  A nice leisurely drive along Suisun Valley Road, Highway 121, then 128 East along the south side of Lake Berryessa, where we got to enjoy some twisty mountain roads and beautiful morning weather.

At our stop in Winters, a local Highway patrol officer had to check and see what so many MINIs were doing in one place.  After our club president Simon completely confused him with his Queen’s English, the group was back on its way to our midway stop in Rancho Cordova via Highway 80 East.

Midpoint Stop -
Our lunchtime stop in Rancho Cordova saw us meet up with additional MINIacs from the Sacramento area, then have an additional drivers meeting to prepare for the second leg of our journey, which would take us along Highway 16, a quick sprint down Highway 49, then an eastward jog on Ridge Road towards Highway 88 to our final midpoint stop.  As is usual for a group our size, we were a complete and total spectacle, with the station worker declaring “I have to get a picture of this!”

For the last leg of our trip, we continued along Hwy 88 East, heading up the mountain towards Carson Pass and Kirkwood.  It was here that things went from our nice springtime weather to a scene from a cold December day.  Temperatures dropped to the mid-30’s, and the snowfall we were greeted with during the last leg of our drive was a stark contrast to the sunny mountainside scenery we were seeing before.

A quick left onto Highway 89 took us to Meyers near Echo Lake, then a short drive along Pioneer Trail to Stateline, NV to wrap up the day.  Some members joined up for beers at a local Irish pub to put an exclamation point on a fabulous day’s drive.

This is a fun run into the beautiful and historic Gold Country of California. We begin the run in Santa Nella and will be on flat country farm roads for the first 90 minutes or so. Once past we will then get into some very windy roads heading up into the mountain communities. They are very narrow in some spots but we will slow speed down as we get to see the beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains heading into the Tuolumne County side.

We will continue on through Jamestown up through Sonora and on to Indigeny Cidery where we will have our NorCal Mini Club Annual Summer Picnic. The club is providing sandwiches and fixings. If you want to bring your own food you are welcome to do so as well (note: bring your own outdoor lawn chairs as well)

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THIS EVENT!

Finally, in conjunction with this run, and in the spirit of giving back which the club takes very seriously, we are collecting donations for the local animal rescue Anne Sitter spends much time volunteering with. As a foster mother to many many sick cats, kittens and mom/kitten families, Anne's passion lies with animal rescue.

Heading Home Animal Rescue a local rescue whose focus is on feral cat communities and rescuing and rehabbing cats and kittens to adopt out. However, they also rescue and rehab dogs, puppies, rabbits, birds and the occasional wild small animal.

HHAR also has a barn cat program for feral cats who cannot be adopted out due to their fear of humans but who thrive in barn situations as mousers and rodent catchers. Anne has volunteered much time with them for about 8 years fostering, rehabbing and working on spay/neuter days for the rescue. Any amount of money goes to the rescue to help with veterinary bills, purchasing food, meds and whatever else is needed to ensure they can rescue and find loving home for as many animals as possible.

Check out their website and you will see a few before and after pictures of cats and kittens who have come into the rescue and rehabbed. All of them have been adopted out and are now living their best lives, one of them even with NorCal Mini's Officer Mike Toibin and his wife Christine and 2 of them with club directors Dave and Anne Sitter.

The club will be matching donations with their own donation of $250.

On behalf Heading Home Anne thanks you all in advance for your kind donations to help these animals who cannot help themselves.

Heading Home is an amazing organization so come on NorCal open your wallets and your hearts and donate as much as you can!!
Let's blow the $250 club donation away!!

Napa Sonoma Twisty Run (formerly Lavender Hills Run) - June 13, 2021

Your Hosts For The Event:

Patrick and Michelle Lewis

Date of the Event:

Sunday June 13, 2021

Rejoice twisty road enthusiasts! Enjoy your day zipping over twisty two-lane freeway connecting Fairfield to Napa, then for part two, climb out of Napa Valley's famous Wine Country along narrow, twisty mountain passes to reach Lagunitas Brewery/Petaluma. This route was originally titled "Lavender Farms / Sonoma Run". Alas, the area's Lavender Farms are unable to support our growing size.

Anticipate 3 hours of concentrated driving, broken into two segments. Our first half, from Fairfield leading to Napa, is on smooth, single lane freeway. Though our departure is timed to miss morning lake boat traffic, if we encounter trucks pulling trailers, we will collectively enjoy the scenery at their pace - there are few passing lanes. Spirited drivers will wish to revisit this loop again, and again. Comfort stop is Starbucks, 1340 Trancas St, Napa. We’ll break here for 30 minutes. There is a bathroom in Starbucks and the Wendy’s.

Our second half, from Napa, over the mountain passes leading to Petaluma occur on narrow, at times BUMPY single lane roads, perhaps annoying for MINI's with competition suspensions. Stock suspensions will fare better. PRO TIP: MINI's who wish to avoid the super twisty fun, or bumpy sections, may wish to break off in Napa, to use smoother/direct freeway routes that most GPS units natively recommend. Just break-off, and meet us at Lagunitas Brewery where the run will end.

Meet Up Time: 8:30am
Departure Time: 9:00am

Meet Up Location:
Starbucks (Solano Mall)
1350 Travis Blvd
Fairfield, CA

Additional Run Notes:
This run will end at the Lagunitas Brewery at 1280 N McDowell Blvd, Petaluma. If you decide you wish to stop in for lunch be aware that it is first-come, first-serve: no reservations are possible. Anticipate a wait. If interested please contact them for current restrictions.

Please note that the hosts for this event will NOT be distributing printed hard copies of the route. If you wish to use one please print one yourselves before attending.

You must RSVP via MotorSportReg:
https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/napa-sonoma-twisty-run-norcal-minis-823223

Social distancing and facemasks are required.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will NOT be provided by the club

No lunch is being arranged.
No radios will be lent out.

You assume all risks and agree the Club holds no liability if you or anyone in your party should develop any Covid-19 symptoms afterwards by attending a NorCal MINIs event. Participants are required to follow these guidelines; any participant may be asked to leave the event for non-compliance.
