EVENT UPDATE (as of Jan. 17, 2023)

Due to the impacts from recent storms on the East Bay hill roadways, we must move our meeting location to the Foothill Square Shopping Center (10700 MacArthur Blvd., Suite 200, Oakland, CA 94605) and change our planned run route.

Some of the roads we originally planned to drive have experienced washouts due to the excessive rainfall. Our host, Eddie, has pre-run the new route to verify it is in good condition for our run on Sunday, January 22. Please read the updated information below.

For the first run of 2023, we will take on the East Bay backroads! This run will be made up of twisty roads from start to finish. Due to the weather and continued runoff, the roads will be wet and may have some runoff debris, so we will drive at a leisurely speed for safety based on conditions.

Please have a radio tuned to Channel 7-21 CTCSS to hear alerts during the run! The Club has loaners if you don’t have your own. Leaders will use the club radios to alert drivers to hazards, so please have your radios or borrow the club radios to listen in.

We will meet-up at the Foothill Square Shopping Center (10700 MacArthur Blvd. Ste. 200, Oakland, CA 94605) parking lot at 9:15am. We will conduct our driver’s meeting and radio checks at this time. Please use the restroom well before our driver's briefing at 9:45 AM! We will split into two groups with the first group heading out promptly at 10:00 am for our first leg of the drive, and the second group heading out at 10:15 AM to provide some separation between the groups.

The first leg of the run is a 45-minute drive that starts by driving east through some residential streets to connect to Skyline Blvd. Once on Skyline Blvd., we will drive northwest for 10 miles and turn right onto Grizzly Peak Blvd.

We will drive on Grizzly Peak Blvd. for about 15 minutes until we reach Golf Course Road which will lead us to a picnic rest area in Tilden Regional Park. We will take our first rest stop here in the park.

Our second leg of the run will be another 45-minute drive northeast to Martinez. Heading east from Tilden Park via Wildcat Canyon Road, we will turn left onto San Pablo Dam Road, drive along San Pablo Reservoir, and reach the east side of the town of El Sobrante. We will then head east via Castro Ranch Road and Alhambra Valley Road as we enter into the Martinez/Concord area. Alhambra Valley Road will curve north past the John Muir National Historic Site and through the town of Martinez.

We will finish the drive with both groups meeting at the Martinez Marina parking lot (7 N. Court Street, Martinez, CA 94553) where the waters of Suisun Bay meet up with the Carquinez Strait. Following group photos and the driver debriefing here at the marina, please get together with some of your Club friends and enjoy lunch on your own at one of the many restaurants in the downtown Martinez area.

Meet Up Time/Departure Time:

9:15am/ 10:00am (Group 1) & 10:15am (Group 2)

Meet Up Location:

Foothill Square Shopping Center

10700 MacArthur Boulevard STE 200

Oakland, CA 94605

Additional Run Details:

*Please bring your radio*, fully charged, turned on, and tuned to Channel 7, Subchannel 21 before you arrive at the start. If you don’t have a radio, ask for a loaner at the driver’s meeting. For radio recommendations, please see https://www.facebook.com/legacy/notes/728353274556164/.

Be sure to turn the “VOX” voice-activated setting OFF, or we will hear the wind from your AC, your conversations, and any noise in your car broadcasting to everyone.

Make a pit stop before the meetup. We will be driving for a straight hour through twisty hills, so plan ahead.

We'd classify this run as "advanced". There *will* be twisty roads along most of the route (the views of the Bay from Skyline and Grizzly Peak make it worth it). The lead car will be keeping a safe pace throughout.

Bay Area backroads can be rough. There are no major hazards that would take out a car, but some of the hill sections are definitely bumpier than others.

Expect parked cars, pedestrians, and bike traffic. The area on Skyline near the Chabot Science Center has a few popular parks with hikers crossing the road, so we'll be taking it easy through here.

We’ll be driving through some residential areas around Skyline Boulevard and Grizzly Peak Boulevard are residential-ish, so we will be taking it slow through these areas.

Let’s finish the drive as a group at the Martinez Marina Parking lot. This is a good point for club pictures and making plans for lunch.
