Increased Sales For MINI In September

The Auto Channel reports that MINI USA had sales of 4,128 automobiles in September - an increase of 9.7% compared to 3,762 cars reported in the same month a year ago. However, year-to-date sales show a decrease of 14 percent. The data shows the biggest year-to-date drop to be in sales of the hardtop - over 20%.

Mr. Jim McDowell, MINI USA VP, commented:

September was another unique 'out of wack' month as many dealers reported fewer shoppers and tire-kickers after the end of the 'Cash for Clunkers' program. MINI has been fortunate to counter this climate with higher sales compared to last September and serious buyers helping the brand to continuously increase its market share.

Actually Jim we think the data for September includes the Cash for Clunkers numbers accounting for better MINI USA sales. However, we are concerned by a 20% drop in hardtop sales at a time you are touting addition of a Crossover, a Speedster and a Roadster for late next year. October numbers should be the more normal and telling since they will not be affected by Cash for Clunkers and should be a test of consumer's holiday spending mood.
