A national seat belt safety campaign has been initiated. Although 95.3% of all California drivers comply with the "buckle up" law (well above the national average) California will increase enforcement of the law. Fines have increased so the minimum fine is $142. In addition, the cost of failing to properly buckle up any child under the age of 16 has increased to at least $445 per child for a first offense and $1005 or more on a second offense.
