Opened this May in Munich, Germany, the new BMW Energy And Environmental Test Centre contains three thermal wind tunnels— the “climatic wind tunnel”, the “thermal wind tunnel“ and the “environmental wind tunnel” — and two test chambers — the “altitude test chamber” and the “cold test chamber”. The thermal wind tunnel is designed for tests of cooling performance and thermal management. The environmental wind tunnel provides tests to ensure operational reliability and road safety under all climatic conditions and provides a simulated temperature range of -20 to +55 °C (-4 to +131 degrees F). The altitude test chamber simulates test drives at an altitude of up to 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level for fuel-consumption measurement and the study of emissions behavior at high altitudes or in the cold.
