San Francisco Chronicle reports that researchers at Bay Area Consumers' Checkbook and Checkbook.org went outpriced four specific models of tires at 48 tire dealers in the Bay Area. Prices quotes varied by over $400 a set. Of the 48 stores the study found America's Tire, Costco and Sam's Club offered the lowest prices, although the warehouse stores offered a limited selection compared with conventional stores. Online vendor Tire Rack also scored well but had a $75 up-charge because of the need to have a local installer.
