While I much prefer the pseudo-rally-car experience offered by the manual-transmission model, the automatic really isn’t half-bad. The six-speed tranny shifts smartly and quickly, and has yet to leave me frustrated, hunting for gears. We’ll see if that assessment holds up on I-5′s 4310 ft. Siskiyou Summit in Oregon tomorrow.

My other impressions of the Countryman S are all mostly positive. The seats are comfortable, the car is easy to drive, and I actually like Mini’s iDrive-lite Mini Connected infotainment system
