The £23,795 John Cooper Works version is the fastest accelerating mass-production MINI ever made, but its suspension settings are so hard that, despite the spoiler, it can easily get thrown off track by uneven road contours. Far more satisfying was the 2.0-litre turbodiesel, which combines sports-car performance with near Smart car emissions.
More than two-thirds of MINI buyers, we were told, choose petrol because they prefer the sound from its tailpipes and think that a petrol engine is “sportier” and more in keeping with the car's character. Which merely confirms what I have always suspected – your average MINI buyer hasnt got much of a clue.
